Food Services Assistant Option
In partnership with Kwantlen’s Cafeteria, the Food Services Assistant option prepares students for entry-level positions in a variety of settings in the food services industry. The five training modules include:
- Sanitation
- Food Preparation
- Baking
- Catering and Cashiering
- Customer Service
The program is full time and runs for 10 months from September to June.
Applicants must:
- Attend intake interviews
- Provide evidence of 100 hours experience working or volunteering in a food service setting
- A minimum Grade 6 reading and math level
- Complete a “Food Services Assistant” questionnaire to the satisfaction of the interview panel
- Provide documentation of their disability
Training includes:
- Orientation to Kwantlen Polytechnic University
- Class activities and assignments related to practical application of new skills
- Employability Skills Classes
- Participation in work experiences
Academic Content:
- British Columbia Professional Cook Training Guides – Level One
- Food Safe Level I (Basic)
- First Aid/CPR
- WorldHost
- Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS)
Practical Component:
Students complete a minimum of five work experience placements in a variety of food service settings. Work experience placements are approximately five weeks long and a minimum of 22 hours per week. Students work under the supervision of the employer with support and monitoring by APPD staff.
