Teaching with Community Based Learning
April 7, 2010 in the Surrey Campus Conference Centre.
We had a very energy filled event. With a little bit of framing from our keynote speaker, Margo Fryer from the UBC Learning Exchange, students talked about their learning and the usefulness of community based learning (service learning, practica, work placements, etc.) and faculty members listened. Table groups of 9-11 identified common themes in the wide variety of experiences and shared this with the larger group. Lastly, the whole room worked on the issue of student hunger and building a community garden. They made useful suggestions on how to use Community Based Learning as a means of pushing this project forward.

Teaching with Conferences
November 18, 2009 in the Surrey Campus Conference Centre.
Learning takes place in a variety of venues that includes but is not limited to, the classroom. We spent 3 hours learning how others take advantage of neighbourhood learning opportunities through conferences. After hearing a panel of Kwantlen instructors and students tell how they are using conferences, the group then brainstormed how to engage students and considered what students might learn by organizing a conference, attending a conferences, introducing a speaker, interviewing a speaker, asking provocative questions, being on a panel, doing background reading in a presenter's area of expertise, leading a small group session, and more. A number of suggestions were made on how to connect and build these activities into courses through assignments, projects, reflection, and experiential activities.
