Supporting Faculty


Over the last year, the Centre has supported faculty engaged in providing enhanced learning to their students and colleagues.  We are excited to be a part of this process and to share in the innovative ways of learning.


Kwame Nkrumah International Conference from Colonization to Globalization: The Intellectual and Political Legacies of Dr. Kwame Nkrumah and Aftrica's Future. (August 20-21, 2010)

The Conference will commemorate the centenary of the birthday of Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, Africa's Man of the Millennium, and bring scholars and students from Canada and from the around the world to share research and ideas on Africa's place in the global community, and to discuss the life, achievements and shortcomings of Africa's foremost Pan-Africanist.

Facilitator Development Workshop (May 17-21, 2010)

The ISW Program provides new and experienced instructors with a laboratory approach for teaching improvement combining skills enhancement and personal renewal. The Facilitator Development Workshop (FDW) is designed primarily for individuals who will be conducting the ISW at an institution. It is recommended that individuals participate in an ISW prior to applying for the FDW. The FDW provides individuals with an opportunity for professional development in a challenging and supportive atmosphere and provides connections to a larger instructional development network.

Investigating Our Practices 2010 ( May 15, 2010)

Ten students and their teacher of a second semester Sociology course discussed their experiences of participating in an international conference entitled "Scholarship, Teaching, and Learning in the Age of the Plastic Body," held at Kwantlen Polytechnic University in March, 2010. In order to interrogate the efficacy of conference participation for student learning, the class was organized to include a multi-stage group project to organize and present a conference panel and subsequently engage in focused oral and written reflective work in order to examine the learning outcomes of the experience. Various techniques known to enhance student learning were built into the project, including pre-class writing, co-operative learning, and classroom reflection and assessment.

Community Consultation Day (May 11, 2010)

Students, staff and faculty interact with the external partners and community members to review the proposed Bachelor of Arts in Sociology degree.  Out of this process came discussion on the role of community involvement in the future of the degree.

Teaching and Learning in the Age of the Plastic Body - Dialogues with Cosmetic Surgery: A Feminist Primer (March 12-13, 2010)

This inderdisciplinary conference celebrates the publication of Cosmetic Surgery: A Feminist Primer (Hayes & Jones eds., Ashgate, 2009) with presentations by anthology authors and others interested in interrogating the mainstreaming and proliferation of cosmetic surgeries.  The event will involve teachers, students and scholars in keynote, panel and workshop sessions designed to engage participation in interrogations of the significances and implications of the phenomena.
