Eagles basketball set to tip off this weekend
(Surrey, BC)—The Kwantlen Polytechnic University Eagles women’s basketball team looks to begin the 2008-2009 British Columbia Colleges’ Athletic Association (BCCAA) season this weekend with a pair of games against the Capilano University Blues.
Gary Pawluk makes his BCCAA league debut this weekend as head coach of the women’s team. Pawluk, joined the Eagles in the spring after developing a successful coaching resume at Lord Tweedsmuir Secondary School. Pawluk will be joined by assistant Ivan Adrian and both look to improve upon the team’s ninth place finish last season. Eight players have returned to the Eagles roster this season, including third year guard Melissa Adrian (Langley), second year forward Chantelle Doerksen (Langley), and 2007-08 BCCAA Rookie of the Year, Koral Fraser (Surrey).
Pawluk will look to some promising first year players to contribute. Twin forwards, Shmyla and Suveen Thandi (Surrey) are capable of grabbing big rebounds while also provide some tough defense. Jessica Williams (Calgary, AB) will be given the responsibility of running the team on the court as the team’s point guard.
The Eagles first home games will be on Friday, November 21st and Saturday, November 22nd as the play host to the Camosun Chargers. For game times and location, please visit www.kwantlen.ca/eagles.

(SURREY, B.C.) Kwantlen Polytechnic University Eagles men’s and women’s basketball teams are playing National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) basketball team, the San Francisco State University (SFSU) Gators, for the first time on Thursday, Aug. 21 at the Surrey Campus gymnasium. Tip-off time is 6 p.m. for the women’s team and 8 p.m. for the men’s team.
Kwantlen Eagles men’s basketball team head coach, Bernie Love looks forward to the opportunity to face an NCAA team. “We have hosted events like this before but this is the first time that we get to take the court against these guys,” said Love. “I know my team is excited to match up against them, and I think it’s a great step forward for the program.”
Elise Le Brun, director of athletics and recreation, remarked that this game is a turning point for the university. “This is a great opportunity for Kwantlen to show that we have competitive basketball teams that attract high quality opponents. I expect we’ll have a full house that night.”
The Gators, a member of the NCAA Division II California Collegiate Athletic Association, are the first NCAA basketball team to face the Eagles.
In addition, the Eagles will be partnering with Hoops 4 Hope during these games. Hoops 4 Hope is a global not-for-profit organization that supports youth development throughout southern Africa. Any patron who brings in a pair of old sneakers or soccer cleats will receive $2.00 off the price of admission.
Kwantlen will also be host another BCCAA vs. NCAA basketball challenge on Aug. 19 between the Langara College Falcons and the SFSU Gators.
