Economics Cafe Tuesday, November 8, 2011 at 4pm in the Grass Roots Cafe

Presenter: Sinisa Vujovic
Topic: "The Economics of Online Dating: Digistal Search for True Love"

On September 26, 2011, The US Consulate General and The School of Business at Kwantlen Polytechnic University hosted an Illustrated Discussion on Donna DiDomenico's Award Winning Book "Islam Through My Eyes". Donna DiDomenico traveled the world to photograph Muslims outside the Middle East. She immersed herself in their communities, first identifying how Islam spread to each country, and analyzing how Islam took root. From these experiences, DiDomenico created a photographic essay on Islamic culture outside the Middle East, in places like Puerto Rico, Brazil, and China.

After Donna's presentation, a panel of guest speakers presented dynamic and engaging talks about Islam. One, Dr. Zareen Naqvi holds a Ph.D. in Economics and currently works at BCIT as the Director of institutional research and planning. Dr. Naqvi has a diverse international background which includes having worked as a Senior Economist for the World Bank in Islamabad, Pakistan. After the presentation, Dr. Zareen F. Naqvi spoke about her impressions of Donna's book. From Dr. Naqvi's perspective "The main message of the book is that Muslim communities all over the world are peaceful and "normal" communities. They work hard, live peacefully and strive to practice and maintain their religious beliefs among diverse cultures."

60 members of the local community were present to partake of this enjoyable and engaging event. The School of Business welcomes opportunities to interact with the local community in events that foster dialogue and learning. Kwantlen not only serves its students directly, but is an active participant in its surrounding communities. Evenings like this provide a means for Kwantlen and community members to interact and participate in meaningful discourse. Kwantlen's School of Business is excited to have partnered with the US Consulate in hosting this event.

Kwantlen prevails among top universities in national business competition

Kwantlen Polytechnic University business students Steven Vu and Joe Zhao prevailed in the preliminary round of the Inter-Collegiate Business Competition (ICBC), emerging from over 170 submissions from 41 universities across Canada and around the world. The Kwantlen team was named as a finalist in the Caro Systems Management of Information Systems Event.

Led by their coach Kamal Masri (centre), Kwantlen Polytechnic University business students Steven Vu (right) and Joe Zhao (left) prevailed in the preliminary round of the Inter-Collegiate Business Competition (ICBC) in the Caro Systems Management of Information Systems Event

Reflecting on his experience in the competition so far, Zhao, a third-year business student from Richmond says, "It is very helpful for students to gain real-world experience in business. By understanding the issues, conducting critical analysis, brainstorming options and recommending solutions, I have realized the importance of effective problem-solving and communication skills."

For Surrey resident Vu, the competition provided unique learning opportunities, "These case studies are a great way to learn about business because you must place yourself within the situation described and think critically. The learning environment created from this kind of setting is a fantastic experience."

In final round, the Kwantlen team will have a chance to put their business knowledge and analytical skills to work and compete against five teams from other Canadian universities. The teams will prepare a case presentation under severe time constraints to a panel of judges comprised of professors and industry professionals who will evaluate the presentations based upon the clarity and understanding of all the issues at stake.

Kamal Masri, Kwantlen business faculty and coach for the team, believes that the ICBC adds to his students' learning experience, "High calibre case competitions provide students with unique opportunities to develop their public speaking skills and critical analysis of business scenarios." He adds, "They are excellent opportunities to showcase Kwantlen's School of Business talent and dedication to student development. Following the competition, students walk away with a deeper understanding and appreciation of business problems and the related pressure to solve them."

The ICBC is Canada's premier undergraduate business case competition, in which participating teams will complete a detailed analysis of a business case while considering relevant background information, the business environment and issues at stake.
