CARPENTRY / BUILDING CONSTRUCTION CERTIFICATE

DESCRIPTION

The purpose of this program is to provide students with skills and knowledge in the subject area of building construction. The scope and depth of this program is appropriate for students entering industry on a permanent basis.

Hands-on shop experience is the basis on which skills are developed in the program. This program is developed around the individual needs of students, and these needs will determine the actual length of instruction. The program is designed to accommodate past experience, and credit and/or advancement will be given to students who can demonstrate learned skills plus theoretical knowledge. The content is organized into modules to ensure maximum flexibility for individualized learning. This program is offered Monday through Friday on a continuous intake basis.

Students who complete the Entry Level Trades Training (ELTT) are eligible for credit for first year apprenticeship technical training. For further information you can also visit the Trades website at www.kwantlentrades.com

ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS

Students must meet either the regular student admission category or the mature student admission category in addition to the following:

  • Interview with instructor

  • Satisfactory physical health

  • Adequate reading comprehension and math skills as assessed by Kwantlen

  • Completion of high school shop courses would be an asset (Individuals may be eligible for course credits upon verification of a Certification for Advanced Standing issued by the applicant’s high school instructor).

Students with mental or physical impairments who may require program or practicum accommodations, should contact the Program Coordinator at 604.599.2931 to discuss required skills and competencies, and a Disability Advisor at 604.599.3233 to ensure appropriate accommodations can be arranged.

  • Asphalt shingles

  • Concrete forms

  • Basic leveling (builders level)

  • Safe work practices

  • Spraytex

  • Roof framing

  • Basic power tools

  • Cabinets and plastic laminates

  • Concrete quantity calculating

  • Blueprint reading and basic estimating

  • Steel studs/drywall installation

  • Powder actuated tools, hilti and ramset

  • Doors

  • Basic hand tools

  • Cedar shakes wood and vinyl siding

  • Introduction to concrete

  • Floor framing

  • Stair calculating and building

  • Wall framing

  • Taping and filling

SPECIAL EQUIPMENT

Students will require appropriate safety wear in conformance with Workers’ Compensation Board regulations. A list of required tools will be provided by Admissions prior to starting this program.

GRADUATION

Upon successful completion of this program, students will be awarded a Certificate in Carpentry/Building Construction.
