Faculty / Staff Resources

Dear Faculty and Staff,

Transition from high school to university involves many adjustments and challenges which can leave many of our students overwhelmed, stressed and lonely. We also know that quite often you will be the first point of contact for these students.

Kwantlen Counselors have identified six ways that can be of help to Faculty and Staff dealing with students in these challenging situations:

1. Do you see many students struggling with the subject matter as a result of poor study habits?

You can refer your students to our free “Counselling Seminars”, or we can come into your classrooms and facilitate a customized seminar on a wide range of topics, such as working on group projects and others mentioned on our website.

2. Are you uncertain about what to do when students disclose intimate personal details to you or “unloads” on you?

We can assist you in how to manage these situations and find ways to set strong and healthy boundaries in place, on a one-on- one basis.

3. Are students you identify as needing help sometimes reluctant to use Counselling Services?

We can come to your classes and do a very brief (5 minute) presentation about our services. These class visits are beneficial to the students in providing them with one-on-one contact with our services, and normalizing the use of counsellors.

4. Have you ever had a student who was disruptive or inappropriate in class and / or highly distressed?

  • We have made a special brochure to address this situation.
  • We are also available for individual consultations on specific incidents.

5. Have you ever had questions about policy-related matters affect your students, such as Compassionate Withdrawal, Incomplete Grade, or appropriate Student Conduct?

Please contact with us and we will provide information and resources in these matters, without supplanting the role of your Dean.

6. Have you ever had a Critical Incident, such as an unexpected death affect students in one of your classes?

These are rare life events in the class room but they do occur. If you and your students are facing this, please contact us. We can come into your class and offer a range of assistance from providing information to a full debriefing.
