Faculty

Our faculty bring diverse professional points of view, design backgrounds, and experiences. In addition to a core of permanent and contract faculty and guest critics, we invite practicing professionals to share their views and experiences with our students.


COORDINATORS/FACULTY

Lucie Gagné        
Co-Coordinator/Faculty, Interior Design    

Lucie Gagné is a designer with broad experience in interior and architectural design as well as in project management. Ms Gagné joined the Interior Design Faculty at Kwantlen in August of 1998. Her primary teaching responsibilities have been focused on the Design Theories / History stream, site tutorials and field trips, and the Design Studio stream. In addition to teaching, she has been the Coordinator of the interior design program, as well as chairing and representing the program on several committees. She has also been involved in international exchanges and has conducted field study educational travel in Canada, USA, Mexico, Chile, Colombia and Turkey.

Prior to her time at Kwantlen, Ms. Gagné was a principal of the firm Carlyle Design Associates in Ottawa. She had senior responsibility for projects; requiring planning, design concept, detail development and close collaboration with client representatives. The firm worked primarily on Institutional Projects (Health Care, Government and Education), in Canada and the United States.

From June 1986 until October, 1988, Ms. Gagné was a member of the design team for the new National Gallery of Canada in Ottawa. She participated in planning, design, and installation phases for signage, design and fit-up of public, office, and gallery spaces for the new National Gallery. She also provided liaison between the Gallery, government agencies, and project consultants. Before working with the National Gallery, Ms. Gagné worked on interior and architectural design of residential housing and small buildings for several small firms.

Ms. Gagné is a professional member of the Interior Design Institute of British Columbia, and a member of the Interior Design Educators Council (IDEC). She is the outgoing President of the Alliance of Canadian Educators in Interior Design (ACEID). She is certified by the National Council for Interior Design Qualification (NCIDQ); and served on the NCIDQ Board of Directors in 1994 and 1995.

She is fluent in both spoken and written French and English. Ms. Gagné has a Bachelor of Art History and Architecture from Carleton University in Ottawa, and a Bachelor of Applied Design in Interior Design from Kwantlen University.

Brenda Snaith

Brenda has degrees from the University of Toronto and the Ontario College of Art and Design, and is a LEED accredited professional. After a decade as a practicing Interior Designer, the last several as the principal of her own company, Brenda began to turn to teaching, initially part-time at Fanshawe College in London, Ontario and St. Clair College in Windsor, Ontario, but since 2004 as a full-time faculty member at Kwantlen. She has been active in Interior Designers’ professional organizations in Ontario and British Columbia and is an enthusiastic participant in the Cascadia Green Building Council. She embraces all things green and has taught in all streams of design curriculum from the creative side to the technical realm. A seasoned traveller, Brenda has been to more than fifty countries and eagerly anticipates experiencing the rest. She views the planet as a single place and values any and all connections that we make across it.




FACULTY

Bernie Lyon                    Faculty, Interior Design Department

Bernie has had a two part career - one part teaching Drawing and Presentation and the other part ...drawing (illustrating). Bernie began teaching Drawing in 1976 and first taught Presentation in the Interior design Diploma program at Kwantlen in 1990. Bernie also administers and teaches in two part-time Certificate programs at Vancouver Community College (Kitchen & Bath Design Certificate & Interior Design Certificate).

Mark Pritchard                 Faculty, Interior Design Department

Mark has been an instructor at Kwantlen since 2003 and brings to the classroom over 20 years of continuous professional experience as an interior designer. A graduate of the accredited interior design program at the University of Manitoba, Mark is responsible for significant project achievements in hospitality, corporate, healthcare, and residential design, many of which have been published. Since 2003, he has operated his own design practice, Pritchard Design Inc., while fulfilling the role of a part time instructor at Kwantlen. As such, his teaching is informed by current ideas and ongoing, on-the-project experience. Mark's passion for creativity and experimentation in design, combined with his mastery of technical and theoretical issues, provides students with a comprehensive, real world foundation for practicing interior design today.

Martin Ros-Arriagada     Faculty, Interior Design Department

Martin is a Chilean Architect and is always trying to find the balance between the brain and the hands when he works. Over the last 10 years, Martin was living in the Atacama Desert (Iquique), where he worked as an Architecture Professor at Arturo Prat University. Martin is co-founder of a design event company and has worked on many projects among which he renovated his own heritage house and created his own furniture and lighting objects. Martin enjoys design and carpentry and his passion is to learn and work in the diversity of design.

Paola Gavilanez                 Faculty, Interior Design Department

Paola is a Registered Interior Designer with over ten years experience in commercial, hospitality and multi-unit residential projects. She was born and raised in Ecuador and moved to Canada in 2002. Her professional experience also includes teaching at the post-secondary level both in Guayaquil and Vancouver. Her love of design, travel and different cultures makes her a permanent student of the world and she is adamant about instilling this passion into future designers.

Sandy Fraser                    Faculty, Interior Design Department

Sandy's many years of professional practice has furnished her with a wealth of knowledge of interior design, from the creative to the business side, as well as hands on experience in a wide range of project types. She has provided critical design leadership and guidance to many clients with differing needs, as well as mentored and inspired employees and students, while maintaining the highest of ethical standards and invaluable relationships. Successful in making a difference in the lives of those who touched her projects, she entered education to have an effect at the core of design, by teaching others. Her dream is to enable as many potential interior designers as possible to reach great professional heights, to move them from where they are to where they have not yet been, to be the best they can be.
