The Kwantlen Eagles Athletics Program is coming off of its single most successful season to date. Here are just a few of the highlights from 09/10:
- Women’s Soccer Provincial Champions
- Women’s Soccer National Bronze Medalists
- Badminton National Bronze Medalists
- Women’s Basketball first showing at playoffs in four years
- Renovated work out facilities and gym floor
- Purchase of new turf soccer field
Student athletes much like their university classmates often have diverse needs and face many financial barriers to attaining post secondary education. In the geographic areas served by Kwantlen Polytechnic University, we continue to see a high ratio of first generation post secondary students. This is both an incredible opportunity and challenge; we are inspired by these students and their goals and at the same time aware of their additional needs in order to achieve success.
An additional element of a student athletes experience is the increased time commitment required to maintain studies and participate fully in their athletic discipline. This often leaves little or no time to take on part-time work to finance their education. There is an increasing level of unmet financial need among Kwantlen students and our student athletes also bear this burden.
Through scholarships, awards and bursaries, we are able to provide opportunities to Kwantlen athletes who may not otherwise have had a chance to realize their educational dreams while participating in university sports. Such support acknowledges that each person, regardless of circumstance, has the right to learn and the opportunity to achieve success.
In order to continue with the incredible momentum experienced in the 09/10 season we need to create more financial awards for student athletes. It is our goal to begin to offer scholarships at a level that is competitive to other universities. The first step is to create one award for each varsity sport, available at Kwantlen, with a value of $2,600 per student. Please consider supporting the Kwantlen Eagles athletics program with a named or endowed award.
