Program Details

The Kwantlen Creative Writing department is happy to announce that in January 2011, the Ministry of Advanced Education gave formal approval to our approval for a B.A. Major in Creative Writing. Students interested in pursuing a B.A. with us please contact the departmental student advisor, faculty member Billeh Nickerson, at Billeh.Nickerson@kwantlen.ca

The new BA Major was effective September 2011, but students currently registered, those who are currently enrolled in our Minor in Creative Writing stream, will be able to convert over to our Major. Past students with a Minor will need to complete the second term of fourth year courses. Contact Billeh, as above. These 4200 level courses begin in January 2012.

The Kwantlen Creative Writing Department is a community of creativity in which writers discover a purposeful craft and explore the gifts of the imagination.

In-person courses are offered in Surrey, Langley, and Richmond. In the first year, learners discover the craft of fiction, poetry and screenwriting. In second year, writers work on selected projects such as a book of poetry or a collection of short stories. In third and fourth year, seasoned writers begin to work toward publication by way of advanced, genre-specific courses offered on rotation.

The BA, Creative Writing Major builds on our successful Creative Writing Minor by providing students looking for a dynamic, relevant and interdisciplinary education with the opportunity to complete a full degree in a foundational and vital subject – writing. This BA Major is unlike the BA or BFA Majors other institutions offer and provides learners with an excellent foundational education from which many opportunities follow. Kwantlen's BA, Creative Writing Major distinguishes itself through offering students five genres from which students choose three. These streams include traditional genres such as poetry, fiction and nonfiction and less traditional offerings such as screenplay writing and new media. This makes a BA in Creative Writing an ideal forum for learners wishing to stay current with innovative literary practice and new mediums and technologies.

We are a polytechnic institution with a mandate to develop and celebrate interdisciplinary modes of learning. The Creative Writing department offers award-winning faculty, small class sizes, and a wealth of online courses for learners not able to visit a Kwantlen campus.

Description
The Kwantlen Creative Writing Department offers students a community of creativity in which writers discover a purposeful craft and explore the gifts of the imagination. We offer award-winning faculty, small class sizes, and a wealth of online courses for learners not able to attend class at a Kwantlen campus.

Teaching in the Creative Writing Department is based on foundational principles of mentorship, humility, discovery, purposefulness, and learner autonomy. Faculty demonstrate an authentic spirit of inquiry intended as a model for learners. In turn, learners engage with a teaching environment that is collaborative, innovative, creative, and respectful. We embrace emerging and experimental teaching methods and research-driven pedagogy in support of a dynamic educational community that is innovative, interdisciplinary, and socially and culturally responsible. In the Creative Writing Department, learner engagement extends beyond the classroom to encompass community and industry partners and peers.

Career
Creative writing is a vital and foundational skill which will allow students to further themselves in a variety of careers ranging from those traditionally associated with writing such as literary creation, publishing, editing, and communications to new media, marketing, publicity, advocacy and education. Creative writing also allows students who develop interests in other fields, or who go on to postgraduate study in other disciplines , to apply their skill sets to any area they choose - whether in the humanities, arts, trades, social sciences or sciences.
