Welcome to Fine Arts

The Kwantlen Fine Arts Department offers a comprehensive program with a strong curriculum focusing on the ideas and techniques of producing contemporary art within a diverse and supportive liberal arts environment. This dynamic program focuses on the integration of studio work with theory and research. Our graduates are prepared with the necessary skills to pursue advanced Fine Arts studies, enter related fields or to pursue a contemporary professional practice.

Courses include Drawing, Painting, Sculpture, Ceramics, Print Media, Digital Media, Photography, Art History and Theory. Students benefit from small class sizes which allow the faculty to provide a high level of individual attention and support.

Art History Course Descriptions

Our department is a tight-knit community due in part to the close proximity of our facilities. The university offers a wide range of resources and services including a library, bookstore, computer labs and recreational facilities. Students have access to the wider visual arts community through a schedule of visiting artists, of both local and international repute, and through exhibitions of contemporary art at the Kwantlen Art Gallery and the Arbutus Gallery.

finearts

The Painting and Drawing department is a dynamic part of the Fine Arts program. Technical aspects of these areas are addressed in the first year courses through various projects involving subject matter such as still life, landscape, the figure and self-portraiture.

The Art History program offers students courses ranging from Ancient Art of the Mediterranean to Post-Modern Society.

Ceramics emphasizes the integration of ceramic forms, surfaces and materials in the development of a personal style.

The Print Media department operates in a co-operative setting in which students are encouraged to exchange ideas and share experiences.

Photography courses expose students to a wide range of black-and-white photographic techniques.

The Sculpture and Three Dimensional Studies department provides an excellent foundation in the basic concepts, materials, methods and history of three-dimensional inquiry within contemporary Fine Arts and Design.

Digital Media introduces students to digital imaging in the field of visual art. more...

Issues in Contemporary Art focuses on theoretical issues relevant to the production and reception of visual art and popular culture in the last 25 years.

Programs

In addition to the Bachelor of Fine Arts we also offer a two-year Fine Arts Diploma Program (Associate in Fine Arts) and a one-year Foundation Certificate Program. Both are designed to enable students to acquire a solid foundation in the basic skills of visual arts. Selected courses and groups of courses within the program may be applied to university transfer credit in Fine Arts and Education (See Kwantlen's transfer guide link below).

The Fine Arts Foundation Certificate is a self-contained one-year program, which allows students to continue in Fine Arts or apply for programs such as Applied Design, Graphic and Visual Design, Interior Design or Fashion Design. Credits are transferable to other art schools or universities.

The foundation year is a program of related courses concerned with the fundamentals of visual art and visual communication. It provides a period of study, exploration and intense development of ideas and techniques. During this year students will study both two-dimensional and three-dimensional aspects of the fundamentals common to Fine and Applied Arts.

The foundation year is also the first year of the Diploma and the courses are identical in both programs.
