Road Hockey Tournament in Surrey Courtyard a Huge Success!
METRO VANCOUVER, BC - (March 27, 2012) – The sound of sticks slapping the pavement and balls smacking the pads of the goalie echoed throughout the Surrey Campus Courtyard on Friday (March 23) afternoon during the Kwantlen 3 on 3 Road Hockey Tournament. The GT Road Warriors scored 2 minutes into overtime to pull out a tough fought 2-1 victory against the Ice Holes and to take home the championship and a $50 Boston Pizza Gift Card.
The sun was shining as the ball dropped on the inaugural Surrey campus Road Hockey Tournament. Seven teams battled it out for the opportunity to be crowned champion. After a grueling round robin competition which saw each team playing six 10 minute games, the semi-final matchups were set as the # 4 seeded Beavers battled the #1 seeded Ice Holes, and the #2 seeded GT Road Warriors took on the #3 seeded The Franchise. The Beavers battled hard, but were unable to overcome the exceptional defense and goal keeping of the #1 seeded and undefeated Ice Holes and lost 4-3. The second semifinal was a battle between two teams with identical records in the round robin. The GT Road Warriors came out of the gate with a lot of intensity and purpose and were able to put a few balls past the keeper early and maintained their exceptional level of play throughout the game winning 5-2.
The Championship game between the GT Road Warriors and the Ice Holes was a tight checking affair, with neither team able to take control of the play. The Ice Holes opened the scoring in the first half when a hard shot from the GT Road Warrior defenseman ricocheted off the shins of the Ice Hole forward into the net. The GT Road Warriors were able to answer in the second half when their defenseman buried a shot past the goalie from beyond the centre line to make the score 1-1 at the end of regulation. Overtime continued to be a tight checking game, with the Ice Holes star goalie making a huge save to keep the game even. Unfortunately for the Ice Holes the GT Road Warriors proved to be too much when their defenseman pinched in and scored off of a rebound to win the game and the tournament.
“The teams were very evenly matched throughout the day”, exclaimed John Stewart, Coordinator for Student Life and Recreation. “The students who participated in the tournament were exceptionally talented road hockey players and they all succeeded in playing a very clean game.”
The Kwantlen 3 on 3 Road Hockey Tournament is a joint venture between Kwantlen’s department of Athletics and Recreation and the KSA Intramurals program. This is the second road hockey tournament to take place at Kwantlen, with the first tournament taking place on the Richmond campus in 2009.
Congratulations to the GT Road Warriors and thank you to all teams who participated and made this event a huge success!
