Science and Engineering at Kwantlen
Do you wonder how the world and all its parts function? Do you marvel over the pace of technological advances and want to be at the forefront of this wave, wish to find cures or new discoveries, construct leading-edge structures or gadgets, preserve our planet and protect our resources, or seek a career in a field of western-traditional medicine or complementary alternative health? Are you pursuing an education in an area other than science, but have a curiosity to better understand from a fundamental scientific perspective the world and the impact the human race has had or could have for betterment on our fragile planet? Or are you frustrated with an inability to grasp the challenges of numeracy that confront you on a daily basis in today’s increasingly demanding world of change, and strive to overcome the negativity about mathematics that this frustration has created for you?
We've combined theory with an applied learning experience so you might analyze and explore the world on a level most people never see. Our faculty are dedicated to student learning and passionate about their chosen fields. Our classes are less than one tenth the size of first year math, science and engineering classes commonly found at the larger, research-oriented universities. This allows you excellent opportunity for one-on-one and small group attention and two-way interaction from your instructors and from other students, and there is ample research to claim that the greater the engagement of students the greater the retention and educational success.
Our curriculum offers a one-year certificate in engineering, a two-year diploma in environmental protection, and two-year associate degrees that bridge readily into bachelor's degrees here and at other universities.
And it is about to get better!!!
With our transition to a polytechnic university in October, 2008, the Division of Science, Mathematics and Applied Sciences is in the process of constructing four-year baccalaureate degrees in science that build on our existing offerings. These bachelor degrees will provide a solid foundation for post-graduate study in science, health science or sustainability science, but more importantly, prepare you for a career upon graduation – something that most universities seem to avoid stating. We will continue to offer courses that transfer seamlessly to another university for degree completion in science or engineering, but we firmly believe our new degrees will offer attractive and beneficial alternatives to what you can find at the other universities. Besides, being a student at Kwantlen for the lower course levels, you will soon discover that the learning advantages that Kwantlen offers are good reasons to complete your science degree at Kwantlen.
Kwantlen is just beginning its venture with four-year baccalaureate degrees in the sciences, and it is planned that with added resources and facilities these inaugural degrees will serve as footprints to a much wider and exciting range of offerings. A Bachelor of Science: Major in Applied Psychology has already been approved internally for mounting in September 2010 subject to Ministry approval. Stay tuned to Kwantlen’s home site and our Science website for more details as they unfold.
Please also refer to Kwantlen’s School of Horticulture website at www.kwantlen.ca/horticulture for information on what they offer, and the four-year degrees they are constructing, along with the Institute for Sustainable Horticulture.
