Nov 26, 2009. “Night of Milk” Movie Night and Community Conversation about What Matters in the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgendered Community
, Kwantlen Polytechnic University, Conference Centre, Room G1205, Surrey campus
Organized by Students in Professor Charles Quist-Adade’s Social Justice in Local and Global Contexts (Soci 2311) Class. The panel includes Chris Morrissey (Generations Program Manager, Qmunity), Ryan Clayton (Community Advocate and PrideSpeak Peer Leader, Qmunity), Lydia Luk (Gab Youth & PrideSpeak Coordinator, Qmunity), and Ross Johnstone (Director of Youth Education, Out on Screen). Donations were accepted.; and all proceeds go to Afretech’s (African Development Through Education and Technology) Aklowa (Village) Scholarship Project.

Aug 2-6, 2009. The Association for the Study of the Worldwide African Diaspora (ASWAD) Fifth Biennial Conference.
Charles Quist-Adade attended the conference and presented a paper on African Diaspora in Russia.

June 26-29, 2009. International Conference on Gender Studies, Shanghai, China
This conference was jointly organized by the University of Michigan, USA and Fudan University, China. Frances Chiang from the Sociology department, Noemi Gal-Or from Political Science, and Jessie Horner from Criminology jointly participated in the Panel "The Legal Personality of Women."

Apr15, 2009.  Paper Presentation: "The Classroom Without Walls in the Global Village: Linking Ghanaian and Canadian Students in the Virtual Classroom", Noon to 1:30 p.m., G1140, Surrey campus 

Charles Quist-Adade presented a paper at the "Sharing Research and Scholarly Activities" event. This paper presents preliminary overview and findings of a pilot course webconferencing course on Globalization involving largely students and instructors in Canada and Ghana. The overview highlights the challenges confronted, lessons learned and lessons unlearned throughout the more than two years planning and implementation of the project, whose principal objective was to create geographically distributed collaborative learning and teaching between students and faculty in developed and developing countries.

Mar 27-28, 2009. Conference on Tolerance/Intolerance, Difference/Indifference organized by the Criminology Department, G1205, Surrey Campus
Charles Quist-Adade presented a paper on "Is it in Our Stars or in Ourselves?: A Sociological Explanation of [In]tolerance," and Daine Naugler gave a presentation of the paper on "Wearing Pink: Bystanders Challenging the Boundaries of Adolescent Masculinity".

Mar 18, 2009. Sociology Movie Event, Conference Centre 2550 side A, Richmond campus, 2-4 p.m.
Organized by Annette Reynolds, in conjunction with the annual Anthropology conference on Food Systems on March 20, 2009, the Sociology Department screened the film: "Black Gold: Wake Up and Smell the Coffee". The film is an eye-opening documentary on the culture, production, consumption and trade practices involved in the multi-biliioin dollar coffee industry.

Mar 2, 2009. African Heritage/Black History Confab, Surrey Campus
The theme of the confab, which was organized by Dr. Charles Quist-Adade under aegis of the Sociology, was "Silences and Omissions: What Films and Narratives Are Not Telling Us." The confab was opened by Kwantlen President and Vice-Chancellor, Dr. David Atkinson. It was a huge success, with more than 100 people from all walks of life--students, faculty, staff and community members attending.

Spring, 2009.  Book Release: Sociology: A Brief Introduction, Third Canadian Edition
In the spring of 2009, Bonnie Haaland's book (with Richard T. Schaefer), Sociology: A Brief Introduction, Third Canadian Edition, was released;  McGraw-Hill Ryerson is the publisher. Included among the numerous changes and additions in third editon are a chapter on mass media, a stand-alone chapter on global inequality, many of the latest data and reports from Statistics Canada ( the 2006 census in particular), as well as current hot topics of Canadain interest with strengthened global focus. Previous editions of the text have been used in introductory classes across the country, including, but not limited to, the University of Alberta, University of Waterloo, Durham College, University of Toronto, Vancouver Island University, Georgian College, Brescia University College of the University of Western Ontario, and, last but not least, Kwantlen Polytechnic University.

Jan 21, 2009. Paper presentation: "Teaching Critical Thinking through Deconstruction of Identity Politics, Whiteness and Iranian School Textbooks: A West/East Hypernist Approach," Surrey Campus
Amir Mirfakhraie, Sociology instructor, gave a presentation of the paper at the "Sharing Research and Scholarly Activities" event. In the paper, Amir explored his pedagogical approach to teaching about inequality, social justice and identity politics from multiple standpoints based on his experiences as a middle class Iranian male, as a working class immigrant, as a foreign student, as an illegal immigrant, as a refugee, as a Canadian landed immigrant, as a citizen of Canada and as a sociology instructor in diverse communities and classrooms in Surrey and Richmond, British Columbia, Canada.

Oct, 2008. Trailer for “Zelfdoding: The Rise of Helium in Self-Chosen Death”
Sociology and Criminology instructor, Russel Ogden, has released a trailer on You Tube for his forthcoming documentary DVD, “Zelfdoding: The Rise of Helium in Self-Chosen Death," which will be available in 2009. To view the trailer, go to: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GYknh00n_aI   

2008. Supporting Schools, Libraries, and Hospitals in Ghana

June 24, 2008. Paper presentation: "Managing Racism and Sexism - The Intersection of Class, Race, Ethnicity, and Gender Among Asian Immigrant Women Entrepreneurs in Canada and Australia"
Frances Chiang, from the Sociology Department, co-presented the paper at the International Council for Small Business world conference, June 22-25, in Halifax, Nova Scotia. The paper, ranked as one of the three most highly-rated papers, was named a finalist for the 2008 Best Paper Award for Women's Entrepreneurship.

June 2008. Paper presentation: "It Isn't Easy Being Green: Environmentalism, Modernity, and Media"
Annette Reynolds, from the Sociology Department, gave a presentation on the paper at the 5th Annual Kwantlen Anthropology Department Conference on Culture, Community, and Well-Being: "Confronting Climate Change: Time, People, and Place."

June 5, 2008. UBC: Amir Mirfakhraie from the Kwantlen Department of Sociology successfully defended his PhD dissertation:
"Curriculum Reform and Identity Politics in Iranian School Textbooks".

May 12 & 15, 2008. "Supporting Aboriginal Literacy" Workshops, Surrey Campus: organized by Seema Ahluwalia, Department of Sociology
Highlights of the workshop included: a. learning about the educational goals of Kwantlen First Nation; b. considering the effects of stereotyping on recruitment and retention of Aboriginal students; c. addressing stereotypes in teaching and scholarship; and d. sharing ideas and plans to support Aboriginal literacy at Kwantlen.
Among the presenters were Cheryl Gabriel (Educational Co-ordinator, Kwantlen First Nations), Richard Van Camp (international-acclaimed and award-winning Native author), Karrmen Crey (UBC First Nations House of Learning), and Seema Ahluwalia. Special thanks to traditional knowledge keepers Lekeyten (Kwantlen First Nation) and Oyate Anawizipi (Sicangu Lakota Oyate) who also attended the workshops.

April 2008. Office of Research and Scholarship Celebrating Scholarship Forum, Surrey Campus
Charles Quist-Adade, Sociology faculty, participated in the forum with three projects:
a. Panel discussion of preliminary findings of his research in Teen Pregnancy and Parenting Styles, Suhum Eastern Ghana;
b. Workshop on Kwantlen and University of Ghana webconferencing course on Globalization;
c. Poster presentation (with Charles' Introduction to Sociology students) on African Heritage/Black History Month Confab held in February, 2008.

Spring 2008. Webconferencing course on Globalization launched
Charles Quist-Adade created and taught a partially online webconferencing course (SOCI 3320). This course which was co-taught with Dr. Akosua Darkwah of the Sociology Department of the University of Ghana linked Kwantlen students with her students virtually using both synchronous and asynchronous e-learning tools. One Kwantlen student took the course from Bangalore, India.

Mar 31, 2007. Paper Presentation: "A Settler-Witness Account of Lakota Strategies to Prevent Genocide," Surrey Campus
Seema Ahluwalia, from the Sociology Department, presented the paper at the annual Kwantlen Anthropology Department Culture, Community and Well-being Conference on "Genocide, Ethnocide and Human Rights."

Feb 13, 2007. Talk: "The Emotional Capital of Love in Explaining Chinese Immigrant Women's Motivation for Entrepreneurship in Australia and Canada"
Frances Chiang, Sociology faculty, gave a talk at the Institute for International Studies and School of Finance and Economics Research Seminar organized by the University of Technology Sydney in Sydney, Australia.
